Meet Danial

Taz Barber Outsider Interviews

This world is full of people pushing themselves, unlearning harmful beliefs and behaviors, following their curiosity, and just trying to do their part to love life and leave the world better than they found it. If they can do it, so can you, so can we. Because we’re all in this together, and we’re tougher than we think.

In this week’s Outsider Interview, we’d like to introduce you to Danial.

If you had one extra hour of free time every day, how would you use it?
My answer SHOULD be laundry. But I’ll say hang out with my wife and kids. They’re my favorite people.

It’s your birthday and you get to have anything for dinner you want. What are we eating?
Thanksgiving Dinner. All the mashed potatoes and homemade noodles and turkey and… and now, I’m hungry.

Where did you grow up? And where are you now?
I’m from Mill Creek, PA – the best small town in ‘Merica.
Now, I live in Layton, Utah – just north of Salt Lake City

Are you a Minimalist/Generalist/Enthusiast?
Minimalist, baby! I only own a pair of 25 lb dumbbells.

What’s your typical workout environment?
I workout in my living room and back porch, unless I’m at work late and need to use my office gym.

What’s been your best workout gear investment?
Reebok Nanos. Every workout is predicated by a good pair of shoes.

If we took a look at your workout playlist, what songs would we find?
I listen to podcasts (Bill Simmons) during long workouts and hip hop (Drake) during shorter ones.
But – my most played music is Kings Kaleidoscope – a really fun Christian band.

What’s your workout routine like?
Whenever I can! Weekday evenings. Saturday mornings.

Which movements make your body smile? And which ones do you wish you could banish from the program forever?
I like to lift heavy things. Cleans, squats, and deadlifts are my love languages.
Everyone hates burpees – I’m a man of the people.

If you could workout with anyone, who would you choose?
My new best friend, Pat Barber.
If he’s not available – let’s get Donald Glover in the gym.

What’s your biggest obstacle to consistently working out? And how do you overcome it?
Family time. My work requires a long commute. When I finally make it home, I want to spend some quality time with my little humans and pretty wife. Thankfully, they workout with me and we can eat two burgers with one bite.

We believe fitness is about what we can do with our bodies. What do you want to do with your fitness?
Move around better in my 30s than I did in my 20s.

In the last five years, what new belief, behavior, or habit has most improved your life?
All of them.
5 years ago, I didn’t have 4 kids.
They’ve been the most impactful elements of my life.
More than anything, I think they’ve taught me how humility isn’t thinking less of yourself, but thinking of your self less. (CS Lewis Quote). It’s amazing what humility can do for your ability to enjoy life.

What have you become better at saying no to (distractions, invitations, etc.)?
Fast food/eating out. Our stove works, we just gotta use it. Saves money, increases health, and forces the whole fam to sit in a room together and smile.

When you feel overwhelmed or unfocused, what do you do?
Pray and then write. I want to be a full time author in the next 3 years. Writing has become an easy place to center myself. I don’t journal. I write fiction. Most of my novels are creatively releasing whatever is going on in my life.

If you could re-experience a book/movie/tv-show/song/album for the first time, what would it be?
My first thought: The Greatest Showman. I can’t remember the last time a movie made me feel all the feels in such a fun way. After I watched that, I wrote for 6 hours straight.

We’re all weird. What’s one unusual habit or thing you do?
I talk for my cats.
Ghost has a voice like Cartman from South Park. Panda can only say his own name. Shady talks like Snarf from Thundercats. My children laugh, so it only makes it worse. Our toddler is going to grow up believing his cats can talk.

What made you go Outside the Box?
I came for the at home workouts that fit fitness in my life. I stay for the Outsiders.

Where can people find you on the interwebs?
I’m on Instagram as @instadanial_ and you can find my novels on Amazon (or maybe your local bookstore): Angel’s Landing, Dark Genesis, Bobby Undead: Season 1. I also write a weekly blog series here at OTB called Death to Dadbod.

Get to know this community a little bit better by reading through some of our Outsider Interviews. We’re a wolf pack. A band of misfits. Peas in a pod. And we stay gold.

I’m the one you love to hate — I am the master programmer here at OTB, which means I’m the one making you do all those burpees and all that running. #Sorrynotsorry. If it makes you feel better, I’m doing it too. I’m an outnumbered mamma (3 boys) and wife to Pat, and my other true loves are the ocean and cooking tasty meals inspired by our travels.
